SPRINGFIELD — Peter Pan Bus Lines announced plans Thursday to resume service June 5.
The notice appeared on the Springfield-based company’s website and social media platforms.
Peter Pan has been mostly shut down since March due to travel restrictions meant to stop the spread of the coronavirus. It’s the first time the family-owned company has not offered bus service in its 87-year history.
Peter Pan carried 5.7 million passengers in 2019 and serves more than 100 communities up and down the East Coast from New England to Washington, D.C., but only as far west as Albany, New York.
Bus companies from around the country, including Peter Pan, King Gray in Chicooee and Lizak Bus Service participated Wednesday in a 1,000-bus rally in Washington sponsored by the American Bus Association and United Motor Coach Association.
Peter Pan has planned a number of safety precautions to keep its staff and passengers safe.
Peter Pan is cleaning and sanitizing buses. Workers in protective suits use new fogging equipment guaranteed to kill viruses. That’s already happening already at Peter Pan maintenance facilities, including the one in Springfield. And it will happen to every bus every night once service resumes, Peter A. Picknelly, company chairman and CEO told The Republican last month.
When the buses start running again, there will be a ticketless boarding protocol in which passengers will simply give their names. “It will make travel easier and safer for everyone," Picknelly said.
