A teenage boy was rescued from the Spokane River and a man died in the fast-moving waters after a single-vehicle car crash late Monday night.
The teen driver was pulled from the river soon after the accident. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Dive Team recovered the body of the man, who was an occupant of the car and whose name has not been released, on Tuesday morning.
First responders received reports at about 11 p.m. of two vehicles that witnesses said might be fully submerged in the river, near the 2500 block of East South Riverton Avenue, in the Chief Garry Park neighborhood.
When responders arrived on scene, witnesses and evidence indicated only one vehicle, a Toyota sedan, was in the water, according to a Spokane Police Department statement.
The car likely left the road after crashing into a parked and unoccupied car, police said.
When officers arrived, several witnesses had already gone down the steep embankment to the car and were in the river working to free the teen from the car, according to police.
The bystanders worked with police officers to pull the teen from the car.
Police say speed and intoxication are being investigated as contributing factors to the crash.
Police noted that the Spokane River is “particularly high and fast moving,” making it especially dangerous right now.
