NORTHAMPTON — Police are investigating a hit-and-run early Saturday morning that sent a 61-year-old city man who was sitting at a bus stop to the hospital with serious injuries.

Northampton Police Chief Jody Kasper wrote on the police department’s Facebook page that an officer saw a car operating erratically at the intersection of Main and King streets at 12:57 a.m. The car was doing doughnuts while the driver and front seat passenger yelled and pumped their fists from the windows, Kasper said.

The driver reportedly lost control of the car, overcorrected, jumped the sidewalk curb and crashed into the bus stop in front of 99 Main St., striking a 61-year-old Northampton man who was sitting in the bus stop. Police and members of Northampton Fire Rescue aided the man, who had serious injuries,  and sent him to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.

After it struck the person in the bus stop, the car reportedly fled the scene down Pleasant Street at 65 mph, Kasper said, hitting an estimated 100 mph as it passed the Oxbow. The car’s license plate was obtained by police and a pursuit was stopped. Police later confirmed the car had been stolen from a convenience store parking lot in West Boylston.

The bus stop was knocked off of its base by the crash and tipped onto the fence in front of the courthouse, according to police. The department’s Crime Scene Services Unit and the Accident Reconstruction Unit were also at the scene; the crash is under investigation, Kasper wrote.

In another incident at 1:23 a.m., Kasper said police responded to a single-car crash at 430 North Main St. in Leeds. An arriving officer found a car that had crashed into a tree and a fire hydrant in the parking lot of the Leeds Sunoco, according to police.

The driver, a 23-year-old man from Williamsburg, was on scene and uninjured; he was charged with drunken driving and negligent operation of a motor vehicle, police said.
