NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio –

OVI: Cove Avenue

An officer driving east on Lorain Road at 2:39 a.m. June 11 spotted a driver stopped on Cove Avenue near the Lorain Road intersection.

There were no other cars nearby at the time. However, the officer was concerned the driver was impeding traffic by stopping in the roadway to send a text, according to a police report. The officer pulled alongside the car and talked briefly with the driver, who was slurring his speech, according to a police report. The officer told the driver to remain where he was while the officer turned around his car.

However, the suspect began to drive away, according to a police report. The officer turned on his lights and stopped the suspect’s car on Lorain Road. The officer noticed the driver smelled of an alcoholic beverage, had glassy eyes, and that there were “two open containers of intoxicating liquor” in cupholders inside the car.

The man said he had been drinking at a nearby bar.

After the man had difficulty performing field sobriety tests, the officer arrested the suspect for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. The officer then discovered 38 plastic tubes containing suspected marijuana joints in the trunk of the car.

The man refused to provide a urine sample for testing and used vulgarities and threats when addressing the officer, according to a police report.

The officer cited the man with OVI, refusal to submit to an alcohol test, not wearing a seat belt, slow speed, texting while driving, and having an open container. In addition, nearly 48 grams of suspected marijuana was seized, and additional charges could be filed.

Disorderly conduct: Lorain Road

An officer at 9:12 p.m. June 13 responded to Kensington court Apartments regarding a complaint that a woman ripped a door off a mailbox and threw it at a car.

The female complainant said her female neighbor threw the door at her car and wandered behind the building. She did not know why her neighbor threw the door.

Police found the suspect behind the building sitting near a creek and smoking a cigarette. She smelled of alcohol and was “thick tongued” while speaking. The woman told the officer to go back to mommy and to “get lost,” according to a police report. She refused to cooperate with the police and laughed at officers when asked to identify herself, according to the report.

Police found numerous empty beer cans outside the apartment building, and the complainant said the suspect had been drinking and smoking all day and throwing her empty beer cans and cigarettes outside.

Police arrested the woman for disorderly conduct intoxication, obstructing official business and littering. The woman also had numerous outstanding warrants from other departments including assault, assault on a police officer, and attempted assault.

Dumping on street: Brendan Lane

Officers at 12:30 p.m. June 9 cited a skid-load operator who was working as a contractor installing a patio behind a nearby home. A large dump truck had dumped a load of stone and crushed gravel on the street in front of the home despite a warning from a city official not to put it there. Police cited the man for dumping materials on the street.
