THOMASTON – Add the car show to the list.
You know, “What list.”
The only other statistic that might be as startling as the number of COVID-19 victims is the number of canceled events this year. Of course no one is taking an official count of cancelations.
Regardless, car show organizer Jud Reed said what so many organizers from
other events have said – they can’t wait any longer to make a decision on whether to hold the show. The event date of Sept. 13 is less than three months away and there is a lot of work that goes into one of the biggest car shows around. There’s no way to know now what the risks and restrictions will be then, compared to now.
“We have weighed all factors and understand how important it would be to have something ‘normal’ for us all to look forward to,” Reed said in a statement. “However, the likelihood that restrictions would be lifted in time to allow for the show to take place is unlikely, at the very best. Even if restrictions are lifted in the future, we would not have sufficient time to coordinate everything involved in putting the show together.”
Reed said organizers will still produce T-shirts this year, largely because the car show is normally the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Thomaston Police Explorers.
“We are hopeful that some of the lost revenue will be recovered through these efforts,” he said.
“They will need to be a bit different this time since there will not be an actual show, but the spirit of the show will continue, as will the spirit of our respective communities and our country despite the current unusual conditions that we have all been living under. We will try to reflect that in our design of the shirts this year.”
The shirts likely won’t be available until Sept. 13.
The public is also free to post pictures of their favorite cars on the Thomaston Car Show Facebook page.
“It wouldn’t be a virtual car show but just more of an invitation to connect and share…because that’s what the event has come to represent as people tend to reconnect there year after year,” Reed said. “Reconnection is something that we all need after the isolation experienced since March.”
