Beginning next month, the South Central Regional Transit District (SCRTD) will begin a pilot project marrying fixed-route service to pick-up services.

The pilot will focus on an area within Thorpe Road to the north, Elks Drive to the east, Picacho Avenue to the south and Elks Drive to the east.

SCRTD Executive Director David Armijo said the new service is designed to be a convenient customized service connecting residents in these neighborhoods to medical appointments, work, school or other travel needs with just one call to 575-323-1620. Dispatchers will direct passengers to a safe, nearby pick-up point, where a small bus will arrive for the pickup or return trip.

Hours of operation for the project are Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 5:30 p.m.

Armijo said service for the first 90 days will be free, and then fares will be $2 or $1 for youth, elderly, disabled or Medicare card holders. Transfer to other bus routes is free.

Armijo said the two 14-passenger flex buses will use the same safety and sanitation protocols as the main bus fleet, in an effort to protect passengers and drivers from COVID-19. The buses, he said, are equipped with bike racks, Wi-Fi and air conditioning.

Funding for the project came from the New Mexico Department of Transportation, with matching funds from Dona Ana County.
