NORTHAMPTON — A 26-year-old city man is facing a laundry list of serious charges stemming from an incident early Saturday morning during which a stolen car crashed into a bus stop before fleeing the scene, sending another man to the hospital where he remains in stable condition.

The suspect, who was not identified by Northampton Detective Lt. Craig Kirouac as he had not yet been arraigned, will be summoned to Northampton District Court on charges of leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, use without authority of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for the police and operating after a suspension. Kirouac said Tuesday afternoon that the person had not yet been arraigned.

Police observed a car doing doughnuts in the intersection of Main and King streets around 1 a.m. Saturday before the driver lost control of the car, hitting and damaging a bus stop on Main Street. A 61-year-old Northampton man who was sitting in the bus stop was struck by the car and was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The suspect car, which was later found to have been stolen in West Boylston, fled the scene at an estimated 100 mph.

Kirouac said that to the best of his knowledge, the injured man, who he said he could not name, was still hospitalized but in stable condition.

Since the car was reportedly stolen in West Boylston, Kirouac could not answer whether the suspect was being charged with stealing a car as it would be out of the city’s jurisdiction. Northampton Police Chief Jody Kasper had written an update on the original Facebook post announcing the incident stating that another law enforcement agency had made an arrest, but Kirouac said he couldn’t answer whether that arrest was the same person city police summonsed to court as it would identify the suspect before his arraignment.

“We used information from other jurisdictions to help with the case,” Kirouac said.

Kasper wrote that there was at least one other person in the car, but Kirouac said police were only pursuing charges against one person, saying, “at this point we have no new investigative information that other people are involved.”

Kirouac also couldn’t answer whether police knew where the suspect was currently located, however, he did confirm that the Northampton Police Department did not have him in custody.

The police investigation into the incident has been completed, Kirouac said.
