A school-bus executive for the city Department of Education is under investigation for allegedly collecting a salary for a new job while still on the NYC payroll, The Post has learned.
Paul Weydig, safety director in the DOE’s Office of Pupil Transportation (OPT), began working from home on March 20 while making his $110,000 salary. School buses were idled by the coronavirus shutdown after March 13.
Weydig then took a higher-paying job with the Uniondale, LI, Union Free School District.
Records show Uniondale hired Weydig as a probationary “supervisor of transportation” to be paid $125,000 a year, prorated for six months starting April 27.
Weydig later resigned from his DOE position effective June 7, with further payment limited to unused vacation time, officials said.
The DOE said Weydig did not disclose an outside paycheck.
“We were not aware of any job offers extended to him. He did not inform the DOE or ask the DOE permission to work elsewhere,“ a spokeswoman said.
The DOE reported Weydig to the Special Commissioner of Investigation for city schools, she added.
Uniondale’s acting schools superintendent Rhonda Taylor refused to answer questions on Weydig’s hiring.
Weydig is married to Lisa D’Amato, the director of contracts and management for the DOE’s Office of School Support Services. Her salary is $160,749.
In September 2018, OPT investigator Eric Reynolds, a retired NYPD detective, accused Weydig and others of bypassing him to sign off on drivers without a criminal background check.
The DOE gave no update last week on a probe of those allegations.
Weydig, who lives in Port Washington, L.I. — 24 miles from OPT’s Long Island City office — took a city-issued Ford sedan home and back, although he did little or no field work on a daily basis, The Post reported.
D’Amato joined him in the commute.
Weydig did not return calls for comment.
