Bus rides from Nubian Square to downtown Boston got 12 minutes faster as of Monday when dedicated bus and bicycle lanes opened along Washington Street, the MBTA announced.

“These improvements mean that people riding buses and bikes from Roxbury can get to job opportunities and services faster, safer, and more reliably,” MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak said in a statement.

Nearly a mile of new dedicated bus lanes along Washington Street will save 24,000 weekday riders time on their trips from Nubian Square into downtown, while offering commuters “significantly more reliable” transit service, according to a press release.

The long-planned lanes dedicated to bike and bus travel run along a traffic-laden stretch of Washington Street from Herald Street to Temple Place in the heart of downtown and “closes the gap” along the transit corridor to Roxbury.

Bus lanes were implemented along Washington Street throughout the South End as part of the launch of the Silver Line in 2002. This project extends that benefit to thousands more riders, the MBTA said.

“These improvements on Washington Street are a critical part of our commitment to making our city streets safer and more equitable for everyone,” said Mayor Martin Walsh said in a statement. “Delivering on this project is a key part of Go Boston 2030, the City of Boston’s long-term, comprehensive transportation plan, and will help our residents more efficiently travel throughout our city.”

The MBTA and the Walsh administration said they are working to improve commutes for thousands of bus riders in Roslindale, Allston and downtown by taking on 58 transit improvement projects aimed at reducing crowding and improving the reliability of the system.

Go Boston 2030, the city’s comprehensive transportation plan, highlighted the reliability of public transit —  and bus service in particular — as a top priority among residents.

The two entities have teamed up on additional bus lane projects in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our partnership with Mayor Walsh and the City of Boston is critical for building a better T, and keeping our passengers, operators, and the region safe as Metro Boston recovers from the pandemic,” Poftak said.
