A 22-year-old Carbon County driver, apparently on a first date, pointed a gun at a family in another car on Friday afternoon in Lehigh Township, police report.

The mother in the other car took a photo of Zachary Daniel Seiler’s license plate and he was later pulled over by Palmerton police, court papers say.

Seiler, of the 300 block of White Lane in Palmerton and who was released Saturday after bond was posted, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, simple assault, terroristic threats, recklessly endangering another person and disorderly conduct as well as single counts of firearms not to be carried without a license, possession of an instrument of crime and driving with a suspended license, records show. District Judge Robert Weber late Friday night set bail at $25,000 with a 10 percent option if approved by PreTrial Services, records show.

The mother called 911 just after 4:30 p.m. to report the family pulled out of a McDonald’s lot and were heading north on Riverview Drive when a dark gray Ford Focus quickly came up from behind, township police said in court papers. The driver of the family’s vehicle slowed hoping the Ford would back away since the family had their children in their car, police said.

Seiler, driving the Ford, pulled along side the family’s car to pass and pulled out and pointed what would later be determined to be a 9mm Taurus handgun, which was apparently registered to Seiler but for which he didn’t have a concealed carry permit, police said.

The mother in the family’s car said there was a female in the passenger seat of Seiler’s car and that woman hit Seiler when he pointed the gun, police said.

Palmerton police pulled over the Ford at Second Street and Delaware Avenue in the borough, police said.

The parents were told to follow township police to where the Ford was stopped, court papers say. The parents identified Seiler was the one who pointed the gun at them, police reported.

When Seiler was asked, he told police “they both flipped each other off over a road rage incident,” police said.

When queried, Seiler told police there was a gun on the passenger side floor, court papers say. A clip with 10 rounds was found in the glove box, police said.

Seiler’s passenger, who said this was their first date, told officers the gun was on the floor when she got in, police said. Both denied pointing or showing the handgun and the passenger said she hit Seiler when he gave the finger to the other car, police said.

Officers learned Seiler’s driver’s license was suspended and he had three disorderly conduct warrants out of Carbon County Court, police said.

A preliminary hearing was tentatively scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday before District Judge Robert Hawke, records show, but it didn’t happen, his court reported. It has yet to be rescheduled. While out on bond, Seiler must surrender any weapons and ammunition he might have and cannot have any contact with the victims, records show.

A listed number for Seiler wasn’t available and court papers did not list an attorney.
