BAD AXE, MI — Four bars and restaurants in Huron County have been listed as possible COVID-19 exposure sites, and one of the bars is blaming a “party bus” that recently visited.
The Huron County Health Department on Tuesday, July 21, announced four establishments were visited by a group of patrons between 8 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. on July 11-12, several of whom have tested positive for coronavirus.
- Ubly Pub, 2211 E. Main St. in Ubly
- Farmer’s Tavern, 4522 Ruth Road in Ruth
- Smalley's Bar & Grill, 130 S. Huron Road in Harbor Beach
- The Gathering Place, 898 N. Van Dyke Road in Bad Axe
“If you were at these locations during the period of time listed or shortly thereafter, you should self-quarantine, keeping away from family and roommates as much as possible,” the Health Department advised. “Please monitor yourself for COVID-19 symptoms for 14 days since the date of exposure.”
Symptoms include fever or chills, shortness of breath, fatigue, headaches, sore throat, loss of taste or smell, congestion, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, and muscle or body aches.
Testing is encouraged for any who develop these symptoms after being at the four listed sites on the date in question. Testing can be done without a doctor’s order through Great Lakes Bay Healthcare Center, 876 N. Van Dyke Road in Bad Axe, from 10 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
After receiving word of the incident from the Health Department, The Gathering Place owner Travis Chinoski posted on his business’ Facebook page that the patrons had arrived to his bar on a party bus. They stayed for less than an hour, he wrote.
“I want everyone to understand that The Gathering Place has been COVID-19 compliant with ALL State & Local health procedures provided to us,” the Facebook post reads. “Anything from staff wearing mask and having daily temperature checks, to sanitizing each table after every use and the entire restaurant nightly. Recently the Governor started a new rule, non-existent at the time of the party bus, that all patrons must wear a mask to enter the premises and we have complied by not allowing people in, or providing a mask at the door. Since the new rule was established The Gathering Place has banned all party buses and large groups until further notice. We thank you for your understanding during these unprecedented times and we will continue to look out for the safety of our customers and staff!”
The Farmer’s Tavern posted a like-minded status on its Facebook page.
“Our staff has been continuously disinfecting all surfaces and following guideline for Covid-19,” the post states. “If you have any questions or concerns please call the local health department. We are still open for business and look forward to seeing you soon!”
Huron County, located in Michigan’s Thumb region, has had 77 confirmed coronavirus cases resulting in three deaths as of Wednesday, July 22. Fifty-one of those who had tested positive have since recovered. Statewide, there have been 74,725 confirmed cases and 6,135 deaths as of Wednesday.
“This is a reminder that COVID-19 is still present and circulating in Michigan and in Huron County,” the Health Department stated. “Individuals need to remain vigilant, wear a mask, practice social distancing and continue good hand hygiene. Anyone could have COVID-19 and be carrying and spreading the virus without symptoms, or not yet showing symptoms. Everyone needs to take precautions so that we can keep infections down and keep our local businesses open.”
