SIOUX CITY (KTIV) -- With the school year in full swing in most districts, law enforcers are reminding everyone about the rules when approaching a stopped school bus.
A driver usually will approach a school bus on either side of a two-lane road.
If the amber lights of the bus are flashing, but the stop sign -- also called a stop arm -- is not turned out, you must at least slow down to no more than 20 mph.
Drivers should remain stopped as long as the red lights are flashing or as long as the stop arm is out.
"People that violate that school bus stop arm could face a fine of $345, up to $900 and could have their license suspended or have to take a driver improvement class. So these are very serious violations and we do investigate them thoroughly," said Sgt. Jeremy McClure.
Law enforcers say the only exception to passing a school bus with the stop arm out, is when a you are driving in opposite direction on a road with two lanes going in both directions.
