A New Miami firefighter's health is improving after his car was hit head-on by a drunken driver on Aug. 21.

Dustin Cook, 35, was in "very bad shape" after the collision and had multiple surgeries last week, according to  Assistant Fire Chief Jim Lakes.

The crash happened on Stahlheber Road near Gene Avenue in Hanover Township.

Cook, a 15-year veteran with the department, is still in a lot of pain and struggling to breathe at times, according to his Facebook on Saturday. He broke four to six ribs and had his spleen removed.

"I cannot explain how scary everything has been," Cook stated in the Facebook post. "I do know that God has set a path for me. I know loved ones close to me have already seen the changes."

While recovering in the hospital, the fire department asked the community for donations and prayers to help Cook's family. To date, nearly $3,900 has been donated to the fundraiser. The total goal is $10,000.

Cook's son was with him in the accident and was not harmed, according to the GoFundMe fundraiser account.
