Arcadia buses could be full capacity; La Crescent-Hokah buses will be half-full
ARCADIA, Wis. & LA CRESCENT, Minn. (WKBT) – Local schools that are prepping to have in-person classes are making plans to safely get kids to and from school.
In the world of COVID-19, riding the bus to and from school may not be the safest option for kids.
“We’re going to do what we can to mitigate that risk with the masks, the hand sanitizer, seating charts keeping families together,” School District of Arcadia transportation director John Krett said.
The Arcadia School District wants to limit the number of students for each trip, but push could come to shove.
“The buses could be up to capacity,” Krett said.
Some buses will be running multiple routes, as Arcadia schools are providing the option for all kids to come back.
“Reducing that capacity would eliminate some of the things that we have to make happen during a set time frame every day,” Krett said.
Krett doesn’t expect all buses to be full.
“Many parents are realizing that the buses are at or near capacity,” Krett said. “And some of them will be transporting their own students.”
Across the border, drivers in La Crescent-Hokah schools will be taking kids in buses half-full.
“It helps. It’s not six feet for every kid, but it tries to split that up,” La Crescent-Hokah School District superintendent Kevin Cardille said.
Buses will also be regularly sanitized, and all students must wear masks.
Parents will also be expected to monitor their child for coronavirus symptoms each day before getting on the bus.
“And then, when they get to school, we’ll check them again,” Cardille said.
Bus drivers wearing masks poses its own set of problems.
“As people know that wear glasses and wear a mask, they fog up,” Cardille said. “And that could be very dangerous for everybody.”
Both districts know they are taking a risk with kids riding closely together.
“You know, all of my staff here, they’re all very responsible,” Krett said. “They’ll do what’s asked of them.”
But for the students going back, riding the bus may be their only way to get to school.
“It’s how they get here,” Cardille said. “And it’s an important piece.”
Cardille says about 320 La Crescent-Hokah students will be riding the bus this year.
Krett says up to 850 kids are taking the bus.
