QUINCY (WGEM) - With students starting to go back to school, safety is a top priority.

That includes the safety of students on their way to and from school.

Several bus drivers have said other vehicles on the road haven't been following the rules and those drivers could put kids lives at risk.

Bus drivers said those drivers haven’t been stopping for buses when they stop to let kids on and off of the school bus.

Officials said drivers should be prepared to press the brakes whenever they see that flashing stop sign come out.

Bus drivers said the problem may be worse this year because bus stops are taking longer than normal due to COVID-19.

Drivers have to talk with parents and get a report and the kids need to get their temperatures checked before going on the bus.

“It’s compounded more this year because of COVID. We have to take extra time at the stops where it’s longer taking temperatures and people are getting frustrated sitting behind us for so long," Don Amen, Quincy Public School District bus driver.

Officials in Pike County, Illinois said they’ve also seen this problem and want drivers to be aware of the risks to themselves and others.

Passing a school bus can be dangerous, but it can also have serious legal repercussions.

In Illinois, if you pass a school bus, it’s a $300 fine for first office, plus you could loose your license for three months.

“You try to get the license plates, but a lot of times you’re paying more attention to the children. Once you see that everybody is stopped, you’re watching a child unload and the next thing you know you have a car that goes around you. It’s almost too late to get a license plate number.”

Laws due vary from state to state.

Under Missouri law, if a driver doesn’t stop for a school bus and the bus driver can’t see the driver’s face, but spots the violator’s license plate, the vehicle owner can get ticketed and the cost varies city to city.

In Iowa , it's a 30-day suspension, a $250 fine, and up to 30 days of jail time.
