Aces of Trades: From a young age Justin Hinderer was 'infected with the car bug' - The Newark Advocate

HEATH – John Hinderer and his Honda dealership have been a local mainstay for years. So not surprisingly, his son, Justin Hinderer, loved cars from a young age. But truth be told, Justin didn’t grow up thinking of joining the family business. Instead, he wanted to be a lawyer.

“As boy and a later as student, I always dreamed of being a trial lawyer,” Justin confirmed. “I was involved in mock trial teams in high school and later in college. My college curriculum was designed to prepare me for law school and I even made the decision to attend Ohio Northern University because of their law school.”

Then, things took a turn.

“After the LSAT testing, law school applications and acceptance,” he continued, “I shocked my parents by letting them know a week prior to the start of law school that I wanted to continue working in the family business. It took my parents quite a while to get over my choice.”

“I always loved the cars and the business,” Hinderer added, “but I wouldn’t say that it was a ‘given.’ I’m very thankful to have the opportunity to work in the field I love. It never feels like work when you do what you love.”

Now 43, Justin Hinderer grew up in Marysville, graduated from high school in 1995, then Ohio Northern in 1999 with a BS in pre-law and business management.

“Starting at age 5, I loved cars!” he declared. “I was infected with the car bug, whether it was the smell of unburnt fuel in a carbureted American V8 or the unique smell of the new car, I was hooked. As soon as I learned to read, I would look forward to receiving the latest Car & Driver or Motor Trend magazine’s arrival in our mailbox addressed to my dad. So many times, I would infuriate my dad by reading his new magazine before he even had a chance to see it.”

Fast forward. Justin is now the chief operating officer at John Hinderer Honda. But in the early 1990s, he started to work at the dealership as a “lot technician.” He did it in large part, he said, because, “It allowed me to spend time with dad – and fill a much-needed gap in the dealership labor pool.”

Years later, by the way, in 2008 he, along with his mother and brother, purchased the Toy Barn in Dublin. Sales reached more than $65 million in 2016 and that’s when they decided to sell the dealership, so his mother could “retire” and his brother could “pursue his interest in real estate.”

As for Justin, “I’m thankful to do what I love,” he said. “Even though as a young man I developed a love interest in all things cars, over time I’ve grown to love the people more. It’s truly a blessing to be afforded the opportunity to do what you love with family and many great people.”

“He cares about people,” agreed friend and co-worker Erick Morrison. “And he knows how to grow a business. I’ve known Justin 15 years and I think he’s a great man, a one-of-a-kind leader.”

“Although we’re experiencing an unprecedented event with the Corona virus,” Hinderer summed, “I don’t have to look very far to see the positive things happening around me. To see all the folks here working to assist one another here, or going above and beyond for customers, brings me great joy. Although ‘normal’ business is off and everyone is adjusting hour-by-hour, or in some cases minute-by-minute, watching the quality of the human spirit brings me great encouragement – and the knowledge we will prevail regardless of the current circumstances.”
