Two men rushed inside a burning car Monday night to free the driver who had just crashed into a tree in a Massachusetts town.

The actions of the two Good Samaritans were lauded by the Lakeville Fire Department’s chief, who believe the two men likely saved the driver’s life.

The incident all unfolded around 10:40 p.m. on Labor Day on Pierce Avenue in Lakeville.

First responders were notified about a crash and learned the driver was still trapped inside the vehicle, according to the Lakeville Fire Department. The car caught fire after the driver crashed into a tree.

Firefighters and police officers rushed to the scene. The two men freed the man from the burning car.

“Had these two men not intervened when they did, it is likely we would have a much more horrific and tragic outcome,” Lakeville Fire Chief Mike O’Brien said of the men and added that they likely saved the life of the injured driver.

There were no passengers in the vehicle, police said.

It took just eight minutes for firefighters to arrive at the scene and by then the entire car was engulfed in flames.

The driver was rushed to a Rhode Island hospital for treatment to his injuries. Fire officials did not release the extent of the man’s injuries.
