A SunLine Transit Agency bus was stolen Friday afternoon in Desert Hot Springs and stopped about 15 miles away, where a 21-year-old man was arrested after a pursuit, officials said.

SunLine alerted law enforcement about the theft at 12:25 p.m. after the bus operator stepped off the vehicle for a scheduled break near West Drive and Pierson Boulevard, the agency said in a statement.

Assistant City Manager Doria Wilms said officers pursued the stolen bus on West Drive, Two Bunch Palms Trail, into a parking lot and on Palm Drive out of the city.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department and Cathedral City police assisted with the pursuit, which ended at Bob Hope Drive and Varner Road about 25 minutes after the theft when the bus got stuck in sand, Wilms said.

No injuries were reported and the bus was empty at the time it was stolen, according to Wilms.

"There was extensive damage to stop signs in the county area as the suspect ran into them with the bus," she wrote via email.

The bus will be towed back to the agency's headquarters. SunLine said it is cooperating with the law enforcement investigation.
