Drunken driving: Farnum Avenue

An officer went to the scene of a crash at 10:06 p.m. Nov. 1. The caller said a dark-colored SUV hit his neighbor’s parked car and drove away. A piece of the car in question left its front bumper at the scene, which included the vehicle identification number. The officer ran the number and learned the car model and owner. The officer went to the suspect’s house. He found a car with fresh damage to the front right bumper and wheel well. The suspect’s mother was in the driveway examining the damaged car. She said her son was driving it and just came home. He was inside the house. The suspect said he crashed it into a parked car. He then decided to leave the accident and go home. He said he was so upset about the crash that he drank several shots of liquor. He refused to take field sobriety tests. He was arrested for drunken driving. He took a chemical test at the station and measured a .213 BAC, which is almost three times the legal limit. He was later released and given a virtual court date.

Drunkenness: Bagley Road

Police received a call at 10:14 p.m. Oct. 28 about a car that was driving recklessly. The car just exited Interstate 71 onto Bagley Road and pulled into a BP America gas station. An officer found the car parked in the lot and a man sleeping behind the driver’s seat. The keys were in the ignition and the engine, running. A 12-oz. bottle of beer was in plain view on the passenger seat. The driver woke up confused after several knocks on the window. The man said he should not be driving right now. He said he had three beers at a friend’s house and was heading home to Cleveland. His eyes were glassy and bloodshot. He did not have a driver’s license, only a state ID. He failed field sobriety tests and was arrested. His blood alcohol level taken at the station was .011. The officer learned the car he was driving had plates registered to another car. He was charged with several citations and released.

Failure to control: West 130 Street

An officer went to Wendy’s at 11:55 p.m. Oct. 27 for a car crash. A witness followed the driver there after the suspect struck a pole at the intersection of West 130 Street and Bagley Road. The witness pulled the keys out of the suspect’s truck, which had fresh damage to it. The suspect was standing outside the truck when police arrived. She said she was driving it when it hit the pole. The woman was unable to stand and had to lean on a railing in the lot. She appeared to be very confused and changed details of the events several times. She said she did not hit a pole but that another car struck her and drove away. She later said, however, she drove off the roadway and struck the pole. She was unable to remember the proper intersection where it occurred. The witness told police he was driving behind the victim when she drove onto the sidewalk and hit the telephone pole. She then continued driving on Bagley until she pulled into the Wendy’s drive through lane. That is when he grabbed her keys. He said he smelled alcohol in the car and on her. he suspect could not properly perform field sobriety tests. She was arrested also for drunken driving.

Theft: Bagley Road

An officer went to Heinen’s Oct. 26 for a possible theft that occurred Oct. 23. An employee told the officer and older customer asked for beef tenderloin. He gave him three cuts at a $38.56 price. He noticed the man concealed the meat under his armpit as he walked away from the counter toward the front of the store. The employee walked after him and asked the man to hand over the product he hid. The man did. The employee got a photo of him off the security footage. The manager at the time followed the suspect into parking lot and wrote down the car’s license plate. The officer was unable to find any contact information about the suspect.

Drunken driving: Bagley Road

An off-duty policeman called dispatch at 11:45 p.m. Oct. 24 about a reckless driver who saw a car almost hit several other ones. It also ran off the road. The officer stopped the car in his off-duty car and called local police. The suspect had blood shot eyes. He admitted to consuming one tall beer. When asked if he should be driving that night, the man said, “No, I shouldn’t.” He was unable to properly perform field sobriety tests and arrested. His car was towed. He measured a .128 BAC.

Criminal damage: Gerald Drive

A woman told police early Oct. 14 that she found the rear window of her car damaged by a rock. The officer inspected the car and found a rock inside the rear window glass. She said she did not hear anything unusual last night, but believes someone threw it during the night. She said she just moved to the neighborhood and did not know anyone who would damage her car intentionally.

Found property: Pearl Road

A woman went to the police station to turn in a credit card she found while walking across the Mediterranean Market’s parking lot at 6:15 p.m. Oct. 21. The officer looked up the owner of the card and tried to return it to him, but the current resident at that address said he no longer lived there. The credit card is now in the police’s property room for safe keeping.

Speeding: Bagley Road

An officer was patrolling the area of I-71 near Pearl Road at 7:50 p.m. Oct. 14 when he saw a pickup truck speed by the cruiser. It was traveling at 80 mph in a 60 zone. He initiated a stop just north of an entrance ramp. He told the driver the reason for the stop. She said her high speed was due to having such a nice rental that she didn’t realize her speed until she saw me. The driver had prior drug suspensions. The officer asked her to exit the truck. She said the passenger was her friend and she was helping him. She said she has been clean from narcotics for two years. The officer also noted the passenger had a prior dug history. The driver became defensive, though, when the officer asked to search the truck for narcotics. She then back tracked her statements. The officer brought in a K9 who smelled something at the bottom of the driver’s door seam. The officer found nine syringes under the driver’s seat. The motorist received a citation for failure to provide a driver’s license, speeding and having drug abuse paraphernalia. They were both released at the scene.
