Teen passenger dies as car collides with a pickup in Vancouver intersection - OregonLive

A 14-year-old girl, a passenger in a Honda Civic coupe, died after the car was struck by a pickup truck in a Vancouver-area intersection Saturday night, according to Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

The girl and the 16-year-old male driver of the car were taken to the hospital with significant life-threatening injuries. His condition is unknown at this time.

The driver of the 2007 GMC pickup truck was unhurt, according to the sheriff’s office.

The crash occurred around 9 p.m. in the Laurin area of Clark County. Sheriff’s deputies said the truck had been traveling north on Northeast 72nd Avenue when the car, traveling west on Northeast 139th Street, pulled into the truck’s path. The truck hit the Honda behind the driver’s door, deputies said.

Traffic on Northeast 139th Street is controlled by stop signs at the intersection, while there is no stop sign for traffic on Northeast 72nd Avenue. The speed limit for Northeast 72nd Avenue is 50 mph.

Police did not release the name of the teen killed. The driver of the Honda had recently obtained his license and was in intermediate status, police said.

This collision is under investigation.

Washington state issues intermediate driver licenses to teens under 18 with restrictions:

• For the first six months, the driver can not have passengers under 20 years old except for immediate family members. For the next six months, the driver can have no more than three passengers under 20 years old who aren’t members of the immediate family.
• Nighttime driving is not permitted between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. except if the driver is with a licensed driver who is 25 years or older, unless driving for agricultural purposes and transporting farm products or supplies.
• No cell phones or wireless devices can be used to call or text while driving, even with a hands-free device.
