LEE COUNTY, Fla. – The Lee County Sheriff’s Office increased patrol for the back-to-school season to protect students going to and from school.
On Tuesday morning, deputies spotted drivers passing a stopped school bus and motorists who were driving over the speed limit near school bus stops and in school zones.
“It’s not when kids are just in school, it’s when they leave their front door and they walk to one of the 6,000 bus stops. We’re out here today to make certain that people see us. Children are going back to school, slow it down, when those buses stop, see the flashing lights, they have to stop. Safe kids, safe schools. Please when you drive, don’t text and drive, check your surroundings,” said Sheriff Carmine Marceno with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
The biggest issue deputies encounter is drivers passing the school buses when they are picking up and dropping off students. The person behind the wheel is required to stop behind a school bus when flashing lights and an extended arm are displayed and are not allowed to resume driving until the bus begins moving.
Here are some back-to-school safety tips:
- All drivers traveling down a two-lane road must stop in both directions.
- On a multi-lane paved road, vehicles traveling in both directions must also stop.
- For those traveling through a highway divided by a median, cars in the opposite direction are not required to stop but should drive with caution.
