MBTA Increasing Train, Bus, Commuter Rail, Ferry Service - Boston, MA Patch

The MBTA is increasing bus, subway and commuter rail service this week, even though the transit agency said ridership remains scant.

The service boost comes as Massachusetts enters the second part of phase two of reopening, which will, among other things, see office capacity increase to 50 percent.

"Although ridership remains low, the MBTA is preparing to significantly ramp up service across all modes as part of Phase 2 of the Commonwealth's reopening plan," the transit agency said on its website.

Starting Monday, the Blue Line is returning to regular weekday service, the Red, Orange, Green and Mattapan Lines is increasing weekday service, and nearly 60 bus routes are increasing weekday service.

On Tuesday, service will increase on the Commuter Rail and ferry service will resume on weekdays.

Dozens of high-demand bus routes seeing an increase in service include Routes 1, 22, 23, 28, 57, 66, 111, 116 and 117.

Service has been severely limited for three months since the coronavirus hit. Commuters and students either had no reason to go into the city or didn't want to be stuffed inside with dozens of other riders.

The MBTA said ridership now is "just a fraction of pre-pandemic levels."

Here's what the increased service looks like:
