A driver is dead after his car slammed head-on into an ambulance early Saturday morning, but it’s not clear whether a patient was in the emergency vehicle at the time.
As WFMZ 69 News reports, the 3:30 a.m. Saturday crash occurred on Route 33 southbound, near the off-ramp for William Penn Highway in Northampton County.
The car was driving the wrong way -- north in the southbound lanes -- on Route 33, state police told the news station.
The ambulance was traveling southbound in the left lane when both vehicles collided head-on.
The ambulance swerved into the grass, but the sedan did a 180-degree rotation, officials say.
The driver of the car was killed, officials said.
The person's name was not immediately released pending notification of family.
No other injuries were reported, and there was no word whether the ambulance was on an emergency run at the time of the crash.
