NORTHAMPTON — Residents of the city fell victim last week to a series of car break-ins, and though no vehicles were stolen in the apparent spree, police are urging citizens to remember to lock their car doors.

Police took a total 14 reports of unlocked cars being entered during the night of July 9 into the morning July 10, according to Northampton Detective Lt. Craig Kirouac. Authorities also recovered a vehicle that had been stolen in an unrelated case on Fox Farms Road, he said.

The cars broken into were located mainly on roads in the area of Burts Pit Road and Cahillane Terrace, Kirouac said. In a Facebook post, Police Chief Jody Kasper said other affected areas were Acrebrook Drive, Clement Street and Glendale Road, among others. Some of the cars did not have anything stolen from them, Kirouac said, while others were missing binoculars and other items.

Kirouac said police believe that all of the break-ins are connected. He said he doesn’t know whether one person or a group of people are responsible.

Other communities in the area have also recently reported car break-ins and thefts. Southampton police have reported car thefts and break-ins in the area of Pomeroy Meadow and Glendale roads, and Easthampton police have also reported a rash of car thefts and break-ins that are believed to have occurred early on the morning of July 5.

Kirouac said Northampton police are working with other agencies to explore the possibility that the illegal activity across the area is all connected. He encouraged people to make sure their car is locked and that valuables are placed out of sight.

City police are investigating the break-ins, according to Kirouac.
