A 9-year-old boy was seriously injured after being hit by a car in Hingham while crossing the street Wednesday, police said.

The child was struck by a car in front of the Plymouth River School at 200 High St. around 5:31 p.m., according to a statement from the Hingham Police Department.

He and another 9-year-old boy were leaving the school and waiting at a marked crosswalk to cross High Street when an SUV drove around the stopped cars and struck one of the boys. The other child was not hit, the statement said.

The boy was found by officers in the road and flown by medical helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, according to police.

The SUV stopped at the scene, and the driver, a 61-year-old Scituate woman, has since been cited for negligent driving, failing to yield to a pedestrian on a crosswalk and a marked Lanes Violation, authorities said.

A warning sign is posted near the painted crosswalk on High Street, police noted.

The driver is expected to appear at a hearing at Hingham District Court at a future date.
