A well-preserved 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB Long Nose fetched $3.08 million at Gooding & Company’s inaugural online-only auction that closed Wednesday, making it the most valuable car ever sold online, the California-based auction house said.
The Ferrari, offered from the collection of an anonymous American collector, was one of fewer than 40 models that were factory-equipped with the improved torque tube driveshaft and high-performance six-carburetor intake, according to Gooding & Company. It features an extremely rare competition-style external fuel filler cap, a singular color scheme of Bianco (white), and beige, full-leather upholstery.
The car was completed in September 1966 and remained in the collection of its first owner in Italy through 1969. The car then was sold to a dealer in the U.S. and changed hands a few times over the decades. It was sold in 1995 to a car collector in New Mexico, according to Gooding & Company.
The odometer showed just over 81,000 kilometers (about 50,000 miles), a figure that is believed to represent the car’s original mileage, the auction house said.
The 77-lot sale, titled Geared Online, achieved a total of $14.5 million with a sell-through rate of 71%.
Three other Ferraris claimed the second to fourth most expensive cars sold at this auction, including a 2003 Ferrari Enzo that sold for $2.354 million, a 1995 Ferrari F50 for $2.134 million, and a 1992 Ferrari F40 for $1.628 million.
“Our first ever online-only sale was a great success for both our clients and the company,” David Gooding, president and founder of Gooding & Company, said in a statement. “The demand for quality cars has not faded during such uncertain times.”
The most valuable car sold at auction was a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, fetching $48 million at an RM Sotheby’s auction in Monterey, Calif., in August 2018.
