Police in at least four communities in the hilltowns are investigating a spate of stolen cars and break-ins into vehicles this week.

Two vehicles were stolen and at least two others were broken into in Worthington Tuesday night. At least three other cars were broken into in Granville and there was an attempted break into a vehicle on Blandford Stage Road in Russell, police said.

The Berkshire Eagle reported three cars were broken into and one was stolen in Sandisfield.

The breaks in Granville are believed to have occurred between 1 a.m. and 4 p.m., Tuesday, on Main Road, Granby Road and Water Street, Granville police said.

Russell officers have identified a silver Audi with Connecticut license plates and a smaller black SUV that a witness saw driving away with four men in it as vehicles of interest. Later Police recovered the silver Audi, believed to have been used in the crimes, abandoned on Route 20, Russell police said.

“As of now all of the vehicles that were entered were unlocked,” Granville police said. “We cannot stress how important it is to take small steps to help prevent these crimes. Please remember to lock your doors and do not leave valuables or keys in vehicles.”

Recreational and farm vehicles have also been recent targets of criminals so they should be secured as well and the keys should always be removed, police said.

Police in all three communities are asking residents to call the Russell Police Regional Dispatch at 413-586-1508 or the Massachusetts State Police Barracks in Russell at 413-862-3312 if they have any information about the crimes or have any video of the suspects.

The thefts are the latest to hit Western Massachusetts. In previous months police across the area in East Longmeadow, Longmeadow, Wilbraham, Ludlow, Monson and other communities have reported a spate of thefts of cars. In many cases the stolen vehicles have been recovered in Connecticut and at least one Hartford resident was identified as a suspect in one of the crimes.

In most cases, cars that have been broken into were left unlocked, and many that were stolen had the keys inside.
