MTA hopes open bus windows helps slow coronavirus spread - New York Post

City bus drivers are being directed to open windows and hatches on local routes to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, according to internal documents.

“Bus operators are permitted to operate local buses in service with windows and roof hatches open in order to increase ventilation when weather permits,” according to a June 23 internal bulletin titled “Increased ventilation in local buses.”

The memo obtained by The Post encourages drivers to “open windows to the extent it can be done,” as well as roof hatches, “during the pre-trip inspection.”

But hatches on express buses cannot be open “due to insufficient height clearance” in the Lincoln, Holland, Brooklyn-Battery and Queens-Midtown tunnels, the memo says.

Bus ridership has rebounded faster than subway ridership amid the pandemic.

Even as subway ridership crept over 1 million last week for the first time since March, bus ridership outpaced it on all but one day.

Speaking on NY1 Tuesday morning, Interim Transit President Sarah Feinberg pointed to windows as one possible appeal for riders opting to take buses.

“Look, we’ve also got windows that are open on buses so there’s a lot of fresh air circulating. I think right now it’s kind of personal preference,” Feinberg said.

“I personally take the subway system, others prefer the bus.”
