A homeless man is facing felony charges after reportedly pulling a box cutter on a Knoxville Area Transit bus driver who asked him to wear a face mask.
Michael E. O'Donnell, 59, became irate and began yelling at the driver when she asked him to wear a mask as he boarded a KAT bus outside the Walmart, 7420 Chapman Highway, on Sunday, according to arrest warrants.
He pulled the box cutter from his pocket and waived it in her face, the warrants state. O'Donnell also allegedly threatened a passenger who armed himself with a knife and stepped between the suspect and the driver in an attempt to protect her.
O'Donnell surrendered his weapon to police as they arrived at the scene. No one was hurt.
He later claimed he only yelled at the bus driver because she yelled at him first, according to the warrants.
O'Donnell, who has no previous criminal history in Knox County, now is charged with two counts of aggravated assault. He remained jailed on $30,000 bond Tuesday.
KAT began requiring all passengers to wear face coverings Monday to protect against the spread of COVID-19, in conjunction with Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon's executive order mandating face coverings in all city-owned facilities.
