Indianapolis police are investigating a crash that left one man dead Saturday morning after his car was found in a retention pond near 56th Street and Allisonville Road.
Indianapolis Fire Department divers found the car partially submerged with its wheels down 100 feet off the shore of the pond, according to a news release. A bystander who jumped into the water told divers that the car's 21-year-old driver was still in the car and alert, but not compliant.
By the time a diver made contact with the man at 8:21 a.m., he was unconscious and still belted in his seat. Within minutes, divers removed the man from his car, and CPR was performed.
At around 8:30 a.m., the man was transported to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after.
Firefighters hooked the car and pulled it out of the water. A local towing company retrieved the car.
A witness told firefighters and police officers that he was stopped at a light near the intersection when the 21-year-old man's red car rear ended his SUV. The witness reported the man continued to bump his SUV and spin his tires as if trying to push his red car through the intersection.
The driver then reportedly sped around the witness's SUV and continued north on Allisonville Road for 200 yards until he veered right, hit a street sign and drove toward the retention pond.
Two firefighters sustained minor injuries while trying to help the man evacuate the submerged car. The witness driving the SUV was not hurt.
