TALLMADGE TOWNSHIP, MI -- The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call of a car crashed in a ditch off Lake Michigan Drive just after midnight on Monday, Aug. 10.
Deputies arrived on scene at 12:23 a.m. and found the car eastbound on Lake Michigan Drive at 24th Avenue in Tallmadge Township, according to the release.
The driver was pinned to the car with significant injuries. The 22-year-old man was the only occupant of the car, the release said.
Wright Tallmadge Fire Rescue extracted the driver from the car and he was transported to Spectrum Health Hospitals Butterworth Hospital in critical condition.
As of Monday afternoon, the driver’s condition has been upgraded to serious but stable, Ottawa County Sheriff Sgt. Mike VanDenBosch said. The driver is expected to make a full recovery.
Preliminary investigation at the scene showed the driver was southbound on 24th Avenue when he failed to stop for the “T” intersection with Lake Michigan Drive. The vehicle continued south across the westbound lanes of Lake Michigan Drive, across the median, and across the eastbound lanes before striking a ditch on the south side of the roadway, according to the release.
When the car collided with the ditch it rolled once before stopping, according to the release.
There were no other cars involved. The crash is still being investigated. The Sheriff’s Office is seeking blood from the driver to determine if alcohol or drugs was a factor in the crash, VanDenBosch said.
