ASHEVILLE - Gunfire broke out in the morning of Aug. 20 as Asheville Police Department crisis negotiation teams attempted to remove a man they said had barricaded himself inside a city bus while armed with a knife.
"The individual was shot and has been transported to Mission with injuries," APD spokeswoman Christina Hallingse said from the scene on Hendersonville Road around noon.
A Citizen Times photographer witnessed police open fire on the man, later identified as Grant Paul Dalton, 35, of Asheville. The incident unfolded on the 1600 block of Hendersonville Road.
As of 1:30 p.m., police reported Dalton in critical but stable condition at the hospital. APD reported no additional injuries related to the incident.
According to police, the shooting followed 90 minutes of negotiations with Dalton, who began stabbing himself in the neck.
The Asheville Alcoholic Beverage Commission contacted police at approximately 10 a.m. for assistance with an ABC agent-initiated traffic stop involving a city bus on which Dalton was a passenger, police said.
Dalton had five open warrants with ABC law enforcement, police said.
The ABC agent called Dalton by name from the outside of the bus, but Dalton barricaded himself on the bus instead, police said. APD evacuated all passengers and transit staff safely.
The man eventually disembarked and charged officers with a knife in his hand, the police said.
APD officers fired their tasers and guns at the man.
Dalton had two felony warrants for assault on a law enforcement officer causing serious injury and larceny of a motor vehicle and three misdemeanor warrants for injury to personal property, APD said.
Per APD policy, the State Bureau of Investigation has been contacted to conduct an investigation.
The APD is also working with the City Attorney's Office to pursue a court order to have the body worn camera footage of this incident released.
This is a developing story.
