By mid-September, Metro Transit will resume near-normal levels of light rail and local bus service, which had been trimmed since late March due to the pandemic.
Other services, however, will remain heavily scaled back due to plummeting ridership. Roughly 50 express bus routes will remain suspended and the Northstar Commuter Rail Line will continue to operate on a limited, weekday-only schedule.
Metro Transit made dramatic cuts in service in the fall as the deadly coronavirus pandemic began to spread and many businesses were shutdown and residents instructed to work from home if they could.
Metro Transit officials on Friday said in a statement that as of Sept. 12, “many local bus routes, the METRO A Line and the METRO C Line will have about as much service as they did before the COVID-19 pandemic.”
In addition, the Blue Line and Green Line light rail will offer 10-minute service throughout most of the day. The goal, in part, is to allow sufficient space for riders to socially distance.
In July, bus rapid transit ridership was down 50 percent compared to the same month last year, local bus ridership had fallen 53 percent and light rail ridership had dropped 75 percent. Each service had been cut less than 7 percent.
Metro Transit cut service on the Northstar Commuter Rail by 67 percent, and ridership dropped 97 percent.
The next major service change is scheduled for December, but Metro Transit could add new routes or stops if demand climbs along school routes or to other destinations.
Metro Transit staff has distributed more than 50,000 masks and is accepting customer feedback on its pandemic-era operations and safety precautions online at surveymonkey.com/r/mtsummer2020.
