NORTHAMPTON — Police arrested a man Tuesday morning on charges of breaking into cars after a witness reported the alleged activity to law enforcement.

Mohammed Yaseen Elghorfi, 35, of Northampton, was arrested on two charges of breaking and entering into a vehicle/boat during the daytime, according to Northampton police call logs.

Police responded Spring Street at 5:22 a.m. Tuesday for a report of a male entering unlocked cars in people’s driveways, according to Northampton Police Chief Jody Kasper on the department’s Facebook page. Officers identified several cars that had been broken into with items stolen, she said.

The witness provided police with a description of the suspect, which police used when they saw a person matching that description near 1812 Paint & Body. An investigation established probable cause to arrest Elghorfi and charge him with the crimes, Kasper said.

There has been an increase in car break-ins in the area in recent weeks. Northampton police took a total of 14 reports of unlocked cars being entered during the night of July 9 into July 10. Other cities and towns in the area, such as in Easthampton and Southampton, have also reported car break-ins and thefts.

Northampton police on Wednesday took three reports of car break-ins on Whittier Street, Winterberry Lane and Autumn Drive, according to police call logs.

“Please remember to lock your car, keep valuables out of sight, and never leave the keys to your vehicle in your car,” Kasper said.
