The fall months approach and that means Thrive in Southern New Mexico has events coming up.

The first is their annual Stuff the Bus school supply drive on Aug. 7-8 in the west side parking lot at Margo's Mexican Food, 504 East First Street.

Up until 2017, Thrive in Southern New Mexico was United Way of Otero County. The national United Way organization has been doing Stuff the Bus for nearly 20 years and Thrive has continued the event.

"(Thrive) eventually partnered up with other organizations in the community to make it a little bigger so we can just really help all of those kids that need these supplies," Thrive spokeswoman Stephanie Hale said.

The event will be from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 7 and from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday,  Aug. 8.

The "Stuff the Bus" event will follow social distancing and face-covering requirements.

Stuff the Bus partners are Love, INC,Cottonwood Christian Fellowship, Grace United Methodist Church, Rock 97-9, KHII radio, KEDU-Ruidoso and Margo's Mexican Food.

Then on Saturday from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m., Grace United Methodist Church, 1206 Greenwood Lane, will be handing out school supply-filled backpacks in a drive-thru format.

"This is our eighth year going along with Stuff the Bus. We have a minimal crew this year, a few athletes from the high school will be out there," Grace United Methodist Church Pastor Alan McMillen said.

The backpacks will be given to students from kindergarten through 12th grade and the student must be present to receive a backpack, McMillen said.

The school supply drive coincides with New Mexico Tax Free weekend where some items can be purchased without sales tax being charged.

Alamogordo Public Schools' first day of school is Aug. 10.

Day of Caring

Thrive's 29th annual Day of Caring is scheduled for Sept. 25.

In past years, the event began with a kick-off and breakfast in the Otero County Fairgrounds pavillion.

"We have to do it quite a bit different this year," Hale said. "We will be providing all of the volunteers with masks and gloves and we're only doing outside chores we're not doing anything that requires volunteers to go inside the home of the resident."

Sack lunches will be provided courtesy of Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center.

There will be two lunch drive thru areas at the Otero County Electric Co-op office in Cloudcroft for the volunteers doing projects in the mountain communities and at Grace United Methodist Church for the volunteers working in the basin.

As of Aug. 3, Thrive had about 50 applications, though there are typically closer to 150 applicants.

Projects include lawn mowing, tree trimming and painting. To qualify for Day of Caring team help, an applicant must be unable to do the task themselves or  not have the resources to do them.
